10 street foods you must try in London


There has never been such a choice of street food in the capital. We’ve pounded the pavements and challenged our taste buds to find the very best

Mother Clucker, Brick Lane

This former US Army ambulance dishes out the finest fried chicken this side of Kentucky. The flavours are a lip-smacking mash-up of England and the American South; the chicken pieces get their juiciness and spicy crunch from being brined in tea, soaked in buttermilk and twice battered. Have them sandwiched in a brioche bun and slathered in hot sauce or straight up as strips with a zesty lime mayo. Either way, you’ll be hooked. Lemlem Kitchen

Street-food fans are always looking for the next big thing – and we’re pretty sure we’ve found it in Lemlem’s Afro-taco. The Eritrean-inspired creation has been cooked up by the lovely Makda and Jack Harlow, and consists of a traditional injera flatbread piled with spiced chicken or pulled lamb, salad, chillies and home-made pickles, all scooped up in a pillowy-soft taco. The newest residents of East London’s Netil Market, the couple are currently building a shack modelled on a modernist garage in the Eritrean capital of Asmara, which opens next month. Savage Salads

There is always a queue for this stall in the heart of Soho. That’s because the people waiting patiently in line know they’re on to a good thing. For just £5 you get a box packed with a mix of salads, including red cabbage, kale and orange zest, and chargrilled aubergine, quinoa and pomegranate, topped with grilled chicken or halloumi. The only downside is that once you’ve tried a savage lunch you’ll never want to settle for a dull sandwich at your desk again. Broadwick/Berwick Street, Monday to Friday (www.savagesalads.co.uk)

The Bowler

Festival-goers might recognise this curious grass-covered van, nicknamed the Lawn Ranger, from Wilderness or Port Eliot. Out of festival season, hunt down the Ranger and its owner Jez Felwick at Kerb to try delicous free-range meatballs piled onto pasta or wedged into a chewy ciabatta roll and topped with melted provolone cheese. Mike + Ollie

These always upbeat guys serve fluffy, smokey-tasting flatbreads stuffed with Middle-Eastern-inspired ingredients from their busy, spice-jar-lined stall in leafy South London. Choose from slow-roasted lamb, mackerel or deep-fried aubergines, all of which come in a giant flatbread with hummus, toasted seeds, salad and yogurt. Morty + Bob’s

This is the place to come when you need a comfort-food cure after one to many Friday-night drinks. The little Alpine-esque shack in the corner of seriously cool Netil Market has the best cheese toastie in town, oozing a blend of three Neal’s Yard cheeses and extras including bacon, avocado and truffled mushrooms. The craze for Mexican-Korean-fusion food kicked off in LA a few years ago. And London has its own appropriately spiced bandwagon in the form of Korrito, which serves barbecue with Seoul sizzle and kimchi-fried rice in whopping burritos. The buldak chicken is loaded with fiery Korean gochujang (red-pepper sauce) and you can up the spice stakes even further by adding chillies and hot sauce. Eye-watering but addictive. Dalston’s hugely popular Street Feast is sheltering just down the road in Hawker House, a three-floor former office block in Haggerston, for spring. And just like at Street Feast, one of the main draws here is the hard-to-miss 4.5-ton ‘smoking train’ churning out slow-cooked meat to the salivating masses. The brainchild of Bajan David Carter, the smoker was custom made and shipped from Texas and the result is deliciously sticky pork and beef ribs – some of the most authentic barbecue in London. Yum Buns

It’s a sure sign that street food has made it into the mainstream when it’s popping up in a central London department store. For the month of February shoppers at Harvey Nichols can refuel with light-as-air Chinese steamed buns filled with pork belly and hoi sin sauce or crispy prawn and chilli sambal. Bad Brownie

These outrageously gooey treats first appeared at a Clapham market two years ago and prove that street food has a sweeter side, too. In flavours including salted caramel, nutty orange, and bacon and maple syrup, they are the baddest brownies around. But they’re oh-so good.
